  MISHMERES STAM

The Va'ad Mishmeres STAM is the center for international activities to preserve and promote the halachic integrity of scribal arts: Torah Scrolls, Tefillin and Mezuzot.

STAM stands for - Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzot. They all have to be written on specially made parchment from a kosher animal. Any other material will render the Torah, tefillin, or mezuza possul (unfit). Every letter must be made according to its specific and very detailed form, as transmitted from Moshe Rabeinu (Moses) from Mount Sinai. Even slight variations in a single letter can make an entire Mezuza, Tefillin, or even entire Sefer Torah possul.

The Sofer must have the proper kavanah (intention) and awe for the holiness of the task of writing sacred texts, and especially the holy name of G-d.

So, how does one know that all the above criteria are met.

By knowing who the Sofer is. Is the Sofer certified? Only around 20% of Sofrim have actually passed a written and oral exam and become certified.

All the Sofrim that we use, have been qualified by the Va'ad Mishmeres STAM. Names of Sofrim (scribes) can be given on request.
